The rich history of the Salinas National Guard Armory building began in 1932. It was financed by the New Deal and supported by the City Council and community organizations to replace the previous building on the corner of West Alisal Street and Salinas Street.
Originally, the California National Guard used the building to house a Tank Company C. During that time it also doubled as a civic auditorium. After the Tank Company was deployed to the Philippines during WWII, the Armory became a Wartime Civilian Control Agency Assembly Center and housed Japanese-Americans until they were ultimately sent to internment camps.
Preserving the Past, Building the Future best describes the significance of the overall project. The project will be completed in phases in order to bring the aged building up to code and ready for occupancy. Salinas PAL prides itself on providing FREE athletic, social-educational, and cultural activities to youth, and, in doing so, we are "bridging the gap between cops and kids".
The Armory Project officially began with our Ground Breaking ceremony on September 7, 2011.
We have been fortunate to be the recipient of several grants from local funders and recently worked with a very energetic group of participants from Leadership Salinas Valley - Class XXX. This group took on the Armory renovation as their leadership project and helped us achieve our goal of painting the exterior of the building. We are very appreciative of their efforts and continued interest and support in the Armory Project.
We continue to look for community involvement in this project. From donating time and labor, to donating money to our capital campaign, Salinas PAL is asking for your help with the project. Volunteers over the age of 14 are encouraged to inquire about upcoming opportunities for service.
